System: VectorTrac
International Licensee: CarTrac Ltd.
Location: Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies
Date: September 20, 2002
Shortly before 12:00PM on September 20th, 2002, a taxi
driver was driving his VectorTrac equipped vehicle in the city of San
Fernando when he was carjacked by four armed men. The driver managed to shut
off his vehicle before he was tied up and put into the trunk of his taxi.
When the gunmen started the vehicle, the VLU was automatically activated
due to the failure of the gunmen to properly use the VectorTrac coded key
tag. The San Fernando Sector Activation Transceiver (SAT) immediately
picked up the VLU’s signal and relayed the alarm to the CarTrac base station.
Shortly after the alarm was received at the base station, the San Fernando
VLU listening post also detected the VLU and notified the base station
operator, greatly narrowing down the initial search area.
The nearest
Mobile Tracker was dispatched to the area and within minutes began to pick
up the VLU’s signal. The Mobile Tracker tracked the VLU’s signal to the
Marabella area and within minutes, the tracking officer had visual contact with the
taxi. As soon as the officer notified the base station that he had visual
contact, the base station sent the engine kill command. The taxi’s engine
was immediately shut down and the bandits quickly made their escape. As
the mobile tracking officer approached the now abandoned taxi, he heard the
driver in the trunk. Within 15 minutes of being carjacked, tied up, and locked
in his own trunk, the taxi driver was rescued by the CarTrac Mobile
Tracking Officer. When questioned by police, the client stated "The quick
response by the CarTrac officers prevented any further damage to my vehicle and
to me."

the owner of a Silver 2001 Suzuki Cultus VXR. The car had been snatched at gunpoint
from Sector 11 in Buffer Zone (a suburb of northern Karachi). The VLU was activated
